Boston Brass and the Imani Winds: special residency programs

In January and February of 2009 both the Imani Winds and the Boston Brass chamber music ensembles were brought into the Sandler Center for a unique education residency program. Virginia Beach Public School students were given the opportunity to not only watch these established performers but also be taught and coached by members of both ensembles. The groups each headed into a Virginia Beach Public School elementary, middle and high school during their stay to perform for students and provide them insight into the life of a professional musician. The musicians also held a special evening seminar for Virginia Beach Public School band students studying either woodwind or brass instruments. During this seminar students had the opportunity to hear these world-class musicians play as well as play themselves for members of either the Imani Winds or the Boston Brass and then receive feedback and coaching. In the end, concluded with a flurry of questions from students: How many hours should I practice each day? Which brand of instrument is best for someone just starting out? Where should I study in the future?

Mary Pope Osborne visits the Sandler Center!

In January of 2009, the Sandler Center student matinee of Magic Tree House: The Musical! Brought an extra special treat to our Sandler Center stage: Mary Pope Osborne, author of the popular book series! In addition to greeting our student matinee audience prior to the show, Ms. Osborne visited with students of John B. Dey Elementary School in Virginia Beach - her very own alma mater! Having grown up in a military family, Ms. Osborne found herself living on a Virginia Beach base, and enjoyed a nice trip back home. While at Dey Elementary, Ms. Osborne read from her upcoming book and even let our very own Virginia Beach Public School students vote on it's title!
