History and Mission:

In 2001, the Virginia Beach City Council began making plans to replace the 1000 seat Pavilion Theatre with a facility deemed "equal or better." As consultants researched this new project, consensus emerged on the following points:

  • Virginia Beach has a strong and growing market for the performing arts. The demand increases as more visitors and residents are drawn to the area.
  • Local arts organizations want access to well-equipped facilities with rehearsal and teaching space, reservation scheduling and reasonable rental rates.
  • Region and national presenters want to tap the Virginia Beach market.
  • Existing regional facilities are limited, lacking the optimal size quality and functionality to meet the needs of current and future users who prefer a 900 -1,500 seat facility with storage, performer and production support space as well.

The 43 member Advisory Committee has given voice to the vested interest that all Virginia Beach residents have in the Sandler Center's success. The Committee has engaged local civic, business, education and cultural organizations in the planning and design of the Center.

Following extensive study, the vision emerged for a new multi-purpose facility that will:

  • Meet the needs of the greatest number of local arts organizations.
  • Fill a significant gap in the inventory of performing arts facilities.
  • Accommodate any art form.
  • Attract usage as a rental and presenting facility.
  • Be a vital force for community, cultural and economic development.
